Counting My Blessings This Thanksgiving

As I sit down to write this post, Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. This season always invites reflection, and as I ponder what it truly means to be thankful, two songs come to mind—both of which have profoundly shaped my understanding of gratitude.

A Hymn of Timeless Gratitude

The first is the classic hymn, Count Your Blessings.

I have so many fond memories of singing this hymn at First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Louisiana. As a child and teenager, I’d stand alongside my mammaw and mother, lifting our voices together in worship. Later, as I served in various churches, the hymn became a constant companion, reminding me—and everyone present—of God’s abundant faithfulness.

Though it has been years since I last sang it in church, its words still resonate deeply:

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”

The refrain feels like a rallying cry:

“Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your blessings, see what God hath done.”

If you’re a good Baptist like me, you probably heard the men singing the echo during the refrain as you read that line! 😊

In today’s world—so full of conflicts and distractions—this hymn feels more relevant than ever. It’s a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and notice the ways God has blessed our lives. And when we truly stop to count those blessings, we realize they’re far too many to name.

A Modern Melody of Thanksgiving

That’s where the second song comes into play: Seph Schlueter’s Counting My Blessings.

This modern worship song captures the essence of gratitude in a beautiful and relatable way. The chorus reads:

“One, two, three up to infinity,

I’d run out of numbers before I could thank You for everything;

God, I’m still counting my blessings,

For all that You’ve done in my life.”

It’s a reminder that God’s goodness is infinite and ever-present—in the big moments that take our breath away and in the smallest details we might overlook.

Counting My Own Blessings

Now, for those of you who think I write too much in these posts (yes, I’ve heard it before, LOL!), it’s probably a good thing I can’t count to infinity. But I do want to take a moment to share a few blessings that I’m particularly thankful for this year.

1. My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ

At the top of my list is Jesus. His grace, love, and mercy are beyond anything I could ever deserve. If you don’t have a personal relationship with Him, I’d love to talk with you about how He can transform your life, just as He’s transformed mine.

2. My Family

God has blessed me with the most incredible family. My three daughters are beautiful, intelligent, and most importantly, God-loving young women who radiate His presence in their lives. And my wife, Melissa—where do I even begin? From day one, she has been my biggest cheerleader, always offering love, support, and expert advice. Sideline Media wouldn’t be what it is today without her. She handles so much behind the scenes and keeps our family grounded through it all.

I also have to give thanks for my mom. Raised by a single parent, I’ve seen firsthand her strength, wisdom, and unwavering support. She’s been my rock through every stage of life, and I’ll forever be grateful for her.

3. You—Our SM Family

Sideline Media’s journey wouldn’t be possible without you, our amazing customers and supporters. Although I’ve been behind the camera for 30 years, it wasn’t until three years ago that Sideline Media began evolving into what it is today. And this year—our first as an official company—has been a whirlwind of blessings beyond anything I could have imagined.

I’ve prayed that God would bless this little company, and He has answered in ways I never dreamed. But He’s used you to do it. Without you booking sessions, purchasing photos, and spreading the word, none of this would be possible. You are more than customers—you are family. Thank you for being part of this journey.

4. Florida State Women’s Sports

Okay, I can’t end without a little sports humor. I’m so thankful for FSU women’s teams that know how to win! Let’s add that fifth star to the soccer logo, ladies. And softball season? Watch out. As for Seminole football…well, we’ll get back to our glory days someday. Dadgummit!

A Final Reflection

This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to pause and reflect on your own blessings. Whether it’s the big things or the small details, let gratitude shape your perspective and remind you of God’s greatness.

Happy Thanksgiving, from my family to yours.
